I purchased these buckwheat hulls to make my own version of a Sobakawa pillow. Buckwheat hulls as a filling keep your pillow cooler at night, but the versions offered commercially are smaller than American size pillows so I decided to make my own.I purchased down-proof ticking fabric to make the pillow (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0074A8V6E/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details) . I cut it to 21 x 36 (approximately queen size after sewing), added purchased piping for strength at the seams, and it took about 7 1/2 lbs of hulls to fill it to a comfortable level for my sleep preferences. You don't want your pillow to be stuffed too full or it will be too high for sleeping. Play with the amount of filling by basting the opening in the pillow closed and then trying it. When you finally find the right amount of filling for you, permanently sew the pillow opening closed. I would think one 5 lb. bag would be ample for a standard size pillow.
I also added a pound of dried lavender (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003K7EZBA/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details) to the hulls for a pleasant, sleep-inducing aroma, but this isn't necessary.
These buckwheat hulls have no odor at all and were free of any debris or foreign materials. They come shipped in a thick, plastic bag and there was no spillage in the box.
The end result is wonderful for me! My pillow stays cooler than my previous feather/down pillow and it conforms to my head instantly. I am a side sleeper and it is perfectly supportive for a wonderful night's sleep.I had 2 water pillows from my chiropractor that were so heavy that they were a constant source of amusement for my husband. He teased me unmercifully because we could barely move these things. I emptied out the water and split the buckwheat hulls between the 2. Now I have 2 of the best comfortable, most extraordinary pillows I have ever owned. I no longer have the shooting pain in my neck. I will also buy from this seller again.

Exactly what the package says. I needed this to replace the fill of my meditation cushion when my cat peed on it and it soaked right through. The item was exactly what I needed, exactly the same as the hulls that I emptied out.I do wish that it came with just a little more however. I know that 5 lbs is a nice round number, but I used all of it in a very normal sized cushion, and it was a little less full than before. Still serviceable, but the difference was noticeable. I could have just ordered two, I realize, but the stuff isn't cheap, and then I'd have 4 1/2 lbs of buckwheat hulls laying around that I don't need. I would suggest that 6 lbs would have been the optimal amount to get, so I'll just have to order and additional one pound bag to top it off.I made a pillow out of these buckwheat hulls and have been waking up without neck aches for the first time in years.
