Dreamaway Gel Fiber Pillow, Set of 2

February 4, 2013: I've owned 4 of these pillows since August 2012, two standard, and 2 king sized. I loved the soft squishy-ness of these pillows when I first got them and gave them 4 stars. Now I'm downgrading to 2 stars and here's why: They are now so lumpy they look horrible in the pillowcases. I loved the softness at first, now I feel even when the pillows are stacked two-high, that my head is lower than my feet. These will have to be replaced.

Original Review----I'm a side and back sleeper and this pillow is good for these positions. They are squishy and you sink way down into them almost to where they are flattened, but they spring back quickly to their normal loft when you raise up. The cotton "cover" is very soft, the pillows seem lofty for now, but I can't expect them to last long as they have only a 1 year warranty. When my cheek presses against the pillow, I don't notice any more coolness than any other pillow, certainly not like a $100.00 gel pillow I tried at Macy's--those REAL gel pillows feel cool but you pay a price for the coolness. I'd prefer a feather pillow over these if I didn't have allergies.

I think the description here is a little misleading about a cover; there is no separate cover (pillow protector) provided, the cover is actually the outside of the pillow. When it says the cover is machine washable, it means the entire pillow (but only in a front-loader machine according to the tag).

I'm weird when it comes to pillows. If it's too soft, I can't sleep and will end up not using anything. The same applies if the pillow's too firm. As stupid as it is, I've mainly used the same pillow for the last 10 years because it feels just right...and pretty much has a groove where my head usually rests. There's nothing special about it. It's not a memory foam one, it's not stuffed with golden feathers from some extinct bird, it's just comfortable. I was hoping that these Dreamaway Gel-Fiber pillows might change things up for me, but as soon as I went to sleep using one, I knew that wasn't the case.

Again, this probably won't apply for many people, and if you've used a gel-fiber pillow before, you don't have much to lose when buying this set since the price is low. But good god, these pillows are too soft for me. They felt fine out of the box when I squeezed them, yet once I laid my head on one, it felt like there wasn't anything there. I had to sleep on my side with one hand under my head to give myself a little leverage and comfort. Falling asleep took a little longer than usual too. After just 5 minutes of laying down, I wanted to get my old pillow, or even the memory foam one that I do have. There's not much to say here apart from that the pillow lacks presence.

I'll give this set one extra star because they don't smell weird like some other pillows I've bought have. If you want to buy a solid pillow, I highly recommend the Sleep Innovations Memory Foam Classic Pillow. Despite my picky-ness, that thing is very comfortable and costs just a tiny bit more than this set does. You're getting your money's worth with that one, so give it a shot.

These pillows seemed a little thin, and really squishy. My husband and I were not initially impressed. When you squeeze these pillows, you can easily squeeze all the way through. But they bounce back. For now, anyway. I don't expect the pillows to hold up for a long time, but they are budget-priced.

And they're really comfortable! And they do stay cool! I try to stick to down because synthetics get so hot. Of course, I'm one of those people who sweats in the bathtub. I'm using this as my hugging pillow, and my husband uses his under his head. The man is really persnickety about pillows; why, I don't know. How can one tell if a pillow is comfortable if one falls asleep immediately every night? At any rate, we love these pillows. We sleep great with them. I don't wake up all schweddy, and he doesn't wake up with a stiff neck.

When these go south, I'll buy new ones.

I am picky about my pillows. I don't buy feather pillows because I like to be able to launder them myself. These pillows have a gel core, but feel much like a feather pillow without the allergy potential of feathers. They are full and fluffy, and great for side sleepers. They also " scrunch" well when I want to sleep on my stomach. They have not flattened any after sleeping on them awhile.

I was a little concerned that the gel would mean the pillows would be hot to sleep on, but that has not been a problem. I will be reordering these for our guest room.

Since discovering gel filled pillows are a great alternative to down-filled pillows, making them a very viable option for allergy suffers, which I am one, I've been using the gel filled pillows for a couple of years now. I'm also a side-sleeper who rarely sleeps in any other position so a firm density pillow is what I usually buy. My husband is a back sleeper and prefers a medium density pillow.

My assessment:

a soft, medium density pillow.

lofty and fluffy as described

the fabric covering, which isn't removable, is soft to the touch.

Right out the plastic wrapping the pillows have hardly any odor.

perfect fit in standard sized king pillow cases.

My sleeping experience:

comfortable to sleep on but still wished it was a little more dense

my head sinks down, nearly flattening the pillow

easy to bend and maneuver while lying on my side

no crick in the neck in the morning, which is plus for me as a side-sleeper

didn't feel much of a cooling sensation when lying down to sleep

My husband's experience:

When I asked about the pillow after the first night's sleep, he's response was "Perfect! I didn't want to get up."

I haven't had the pillows long enough to see if they will retain their shape and support, but giving that the warranty is only for one year, I'm thinking that will be the extend of these pillows' durability.

While these pillows do work for me with no real issues as side-sleeper, I'd still prefer a more dense pillow and I'm a bit skeptical as whether this pillow will continue to give me a good night's rest but according to my husband as a back-sleeper these pillows do a perfect job.
