Other memory foam pillows I tried were either too hard or too soft. This one is just right!
Two Thumbs up!
Buy Free Spirit - Memory Foam Pillow Now
We bought two of these at the same time that we bought a new Simmons Comforpedic memory foam mattress. Like another reviewer, we were handed these pillows in the mattress showroom of a national bedding chain retailer and encouraged to hang onto them as we surfed the various brands and models of mattresses. The sales person apparently knew what she was doing. While we were completely confused by the endless selection of memory foam beds, my wife & I both decided instantly that we loved these pillows. We have never owned a memory foam pillow before but the support was much better than our old polyester or down filled pillows and the softness was just right.
As the retailer didn't have the pillows in stock and didn't want to deal on price we ordered two online.
The Smell:
Yes, they stink right out of the box. We let them air out for about 10 hours and my wife was able to sleep on hers the first night. I had to toss mine aside in favor of the old worn out polyester pillow. The smell really bothered me. I aired both chunks of foam outside for another 24 hours without their fabric cover. The second night the smell didn't bother me. So, the conclusion I draw is that while these pillow have the inherent memory foam off-gassing problem, it doesn't seem to be as bad as some other brands. And each person will react to the smell differently. It wasn't enough for me to subtract a star.
The Support:
This is where this pillow shines for me. I'm a side & stomach sleeper. My wife is a back & side sleeper. We both get good support from this pillow and stay in a deep sleep all night and wake up feeling good. That is the key criteria and this pillow nails it.
The Comfort:
Support isn't much good if your ear gets crushed or you toss and turn all night. Here again we found that this pillow strikes a good balance for both of us. It's soft enough and gives enough that there are no pressure points to make you constantly shift position and prevent you from sleeping soundly. It's not mushy soft and it's not rock hard. It's a really good compromise. I think they nailed the comfort criteria too.
The Memory Foam Flow Characteristics:
One of the criticisms of some temperature sensitive memory foam is that once it "melts" and conforms to your body, changing position is hampered by a slow response to changing pressure. In the memory foam beds with temperature sensitive foam, this can manifest itself as a sort of sarcophagus feeling that makes it tough to roll out of the trough that's molded to your body. Simmons touts their memory foam as "next generation" with a faster response time. It's one of the reasons we chose their mattress. These pillows use the same Next Gen foam. As a result, there is almost no resistance when you want to roll over and you don't end up with a depression in the area you just rolled out of. I think this is a definite plus for a memory foam pillow.
The Heat:
One of the things memory foam gets criticized for is heat retention due to the dense foam. We have been sleeping on these pillows in summer but in a house with central air and a temperature of about 75 deg F. We haven't found them to be noticeably hotter than a polyester pillow. I'm not sure if that's because we're not sensitive to heat or the ventilated design of the foam or the density of this particular foam. At any rate, we haven't found heat to be a problem.
Durability:
This is still a question mark for us. Memory foam pillows are supposed to last longer than traditional fills. I suppose we'll just have to wait a few years to find out.
I highly recommend giving these Free Spirit pillows a try. Hope this helps you make a decision.i own the original, it's very soft, but this one is HARD AS A ROCK in comparison. the actual memory foam is completely different from my original one i have. it's even different from this picture they have up. the original foam is like this photo dark beige color and supers soft and plus, but the one they send you is bright white and very firm, looks cheep. Don't buy it, you'll end up losing money shipping it back and forth, they don't reimburse shipping. We were buying pillows every year at different stores for about $30-$40 each and it just didn't do the trick. We were hesitant to spend the money on the pillows but we took the chance and it is totally worth it. These pillows are super comfortable, and do not retain heat, you don't need to flip it over, both sides of the pillow are always cool. With the 3 year limited warranty, it pretty much evens out to what we were paying for pillows anyway. I would recommend this pillow without hesitation. The pillow is great and we received our order just 3 days after making our purchase.
