PlushBeds 3" Talalay Latex Topper Mattress Pad - 100% Natural Latex

PlushBeds Latex Foam Topper Mattress Pad - 3' 100% Natural - QueenI bought a Stearns & Foster king firm mattress, and it gave be backaches for 3 nights. You can't just take a mattress back, so I was considering exchanging for a Dr. Breus mattress, but that would have hit me up for $1600 more with no guarantee it wouldn't hurt my back as well. So I started researching mattress pads and toppers. Originally ordered memory foam, but concerns about chemicals and toxins caused me to send it back before use. Then I read about latex mattress toppers and that made more sense. Found out via research and other great reviews that the cheaper latex toppers can be mixed with some memory form or other not so healthy materials. (I have been researching how chemicals in mattress for fireproofing and such are very toxic and are the hidden source of many of our health problems). Anyhooo, I ordered this topper from Plushbeds after checking out their external website, and felt very comfortable that this is a natural product that is not going to cause me a slow death when I inhale at night. equally as important, there is no guarantee that this thing would have helped my back, but Plushbeds has a very generous 100 day trial period with a money back guarantee, less shipping. A hefty $350 price made me think a second, but that sure beats an extra $1600 on a Dr. Breus bed. So far, it has been worth it, have only slept on it for a couple of days, but no stiff back. I still like my bed somewhat firm, and this 2 inch topper still keeps it firm, but with more "give" that my super-stiff Stearns and Foster. It "seems" to disperse the weight a little more, but like most people, I have no idea what makes one sleep surface work over another. That's why the return policy is comforting before you spend your money on this product.I have to take away a star because there is a rubbery, latex smell that some other reviewer of some other latex pad warned about. I let mine air our for full 24 plus hours and it seemed to diminish that smell somewhat. The smell is not overpowering and not noticeable when I am not in the bed, and can really only be smelled when your nose is right against the mattress, when waking up when my senses are heightened. After a while I am sure I will not smell it, but normally that happens when one becomes immune to a constant smell in one's home. I''ll have to ask someone to give it a "smell-test" in a few weeks.I wouldn't let that stop you from purchasing the product, just wanted to mention it. But all in all, a big thumbs up for what seems to be a quality product, if you're in a position to spend the $350. Obviously cannot comment on the durability of the product over time, but we'll see...................

First of all, it's very comfortable. I put it over a firm non-spring mattress i've had for years and the difference it made is night and day, no exaggeration. Why 4 stars? Because it's not a one piece, but two pieces glued together in the middle. And some small areas came unglued, maybe they were skipped by accident by the worker, i don't know. I understand that talalay latex can't be made in bigger pieces, so all talalay latex mattresses bigger than 40" are glued in some way. I just wished they were glued more carefully... The glue itself is very strong, you'll tear up the latex around it if you try to unglue it yourself. I won't return it, because i'm very pleased with the comfort and the small unglued portions don't affect it. I will glue it myself some day. We'll see how talalay latex holds up in the long run. I understand that it's more fragile than dunlop latex, but it's more softer. We shall see.

About the smell: yes, it does have a latex smell, but it's not like a petroleum smell, but a flowery smell. Quite strange and pleasant at the same time. Like a vanilla cake or something. And 90% of it goes away after some air time (in my case, 2 days on the balcony). The other reviewer here (1 star review and all caps lock) most likely had an allergic reaction to latex and should have known that before he made the buy, imo.

Beware: it came with a COVER in the package. In almost all cases this would be a positive thing, but the amazon page doesn't say this, so i thought i will also need a cover and bought one in advance from another store; now i have to return it (the cover).

Five stars for comfort, but overall only four from me. They should say it comes with a cover and should glue the mattress pad more carefully.

I purchased this topper to soften up a new extra firm mattress recently purchased from a cruise ship line. The "ensemble" consisted of a coil spring mattress, box spring and 2 inch detachable pillow top. Unfortunately, the mattress was not as comfortable as what we remembered on a recent cruise. I replaced the removable pillow top with this latex topper and the bed is now possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on.

It did take a couple of nights to get used to this topper. My first impression was that the topper was way to soft and deep. I went to bed expecting to wake up with an aching back or neck from lack of support, but it didn't happen. My wife also complained that it was a little difficult to turn over also because of the soft surface of the bed. We both quickly got accustomed it and by the end of the first week the topper no longer feels too thick. Although you can take your fist and push this (full 3" thick) topper almost flat, it is both very comfortable and supportive at the same time. The latex has a very buoyant and luxurious feel to it. I can lay on one side for hours where I would usually toss and turn.

I didn't come up the $419.00 without first trying a popular $79.00 memory foam top sold on Amazon. My wife loved it (although she likes the latex better) and my son who ended up with it is crazy about it. At 190 lbs I "bottomed out" the memory foam and would wake up in agony. We considered buying a better quality 3 inch 4 or 5lb. topper but I am not crazy about the "sinking in the mud" feeling of memory foam and I don't like what little extra heat it generates (ok -so I turn my pillow over 5 times a night to get to the cool side).

Bottom lineWould highly recommend this topper for a firm mattress in good condition. I doubt that it would fix a sagging mattress and this is a lot of money for an experiment. Go with the 3 inch topper if you have a firm mattress and want some major league comfort. If you just need a little extra cushioning, the 2 inch topper should be fine.

Notes You will find less expensive "all natural" latex mattress toppers and some that are returnable where these are not. They are probably the less expensive "Dunlop Processed" latex and not the premium "Talalay" latex. This is the same top layer you will find on most "top of the line" latex mattresses. Unlike memory foam, there is VERY LITTLE odor from this product and it is hard to imagine that anyone would find it offensive. Ours had a very faint odor that my wife says reminded her of cake batter. We used the topper immediately and the odor disappeared completely in about 3 days. As far as the unfortunate reviewer who had a major problem with the smell of this topper, they are probably one of a very rare few with a latex allergy. The irony is that Latex is often recommended for allergy sufferers as it is considered hypo-allergenic.

My PlushBeds Talalay Latex Queen topper arrived four days after I ordered it. It is in a compression wrap, but the latex, of course, doesn't compress much and it recovered immediately. That is unlike memory foam which must "flower" for hours and hours and hours and then smells for, well, months in some cases. Heaven knows what you are REALLY breathing in the synthetic foam mattresses or toppers too! Try and find out. It's an uphill battle of "company secrets" and a real lack of testing on humans.

I was dismayed with the one reviewer who gave this topper a one-star review as that purchaser obviously has a sensitivity or allergy to natural latex. It is certainly not unheard of, and can be life threatening. That one review my have kept people who buy something based solely on the star rating from reading further. Natural Talalay will out-gas but is usually harmless unless one is sensitive to it and that is rare. But if the smell bothers you, buy a water-proof mattress cover (like is available at Mattress Firm) which doesn't have that "plastic feel" or noise. I noticed NO smell on the very first night using such a mattress cover on top of the latex topper and I am very sensitive to smell. Plus the topper is now protected from pets or coffee or whatever!

At any rate, I hate that the one reviewer may have spoiled it for all of you who are searching, sometimes almost without hope, for some relief from arthritis in your back, shoulders, or neck. I have one huge mess with all kinds of various diagnoses going on and this is the ONLY way to go. It may sound trite, but I have bought one or two of just about everything on the market with not enough pressure/pain relief.

I would recommend this 3" topper for ANYONE who is trying to get relief from shoulder pain. If your shoulder sinks through WHATEVER your topper or mattress is, to the hard surface, your shoulder will get aggravated at night. Neck pain can also result. The three inches covers almost every body weight. Those who buy a thinner topper may NOT be getting enough DEPTH before hitting the very surface from which they are trying to escape! It is worth the extra money to make sure that you don't "bottom out" in the heavier areas of your body, like your shoulders or your hips. Purchasing the 3" may keep you from the start may keep you from having to purchase an additional topper and will all but guarantee you won't sink down to whatever it is from which you are trying to escape.

What may at first feel a little too hard, will loosen after a couple of weeks. That is the nature of natural Talalay latex, be it a topper or a pillow. The smell is faint, if it exists at all, and will fade shortly. The topper is breathable, unlike memory foam which is very hot in the summer (or to people who sleep hot all year long) and has slow recovery after you move. And memory foam is both COLD and HARD in winter bedroom temperatures! Memory foam is also more difficult to move ON because you sink in according to your weight and body heat. It feels just like you are sleeping on a huge hunk of modeling clay! This is far from the comforting snuggly feel of natural latex which breathes, doesn't hold uncomfortable heat, and recovers the split second you change positions.

As I mentioned, I received my topper in FOUR days from across the country, also got free delivery, and am pleased with the quality of the topper. If you have doubts about the return policy, or whatever, I suggest you contact the company before you purchase. Mine came with a return form. So I don't know exactly WHAT happened with the one-star reviewer except the sensitivity/allergy and maybe there was some technicality such as length of time before actually beginning the return process. Unfortunately, those seeking the best pressure point relief may be deterred by that review.

I hope I have helped some of you pain relief seekers and that you won't be afraid to fork out a few hundred dollars even though it may SEEM like a lot! Cut back ANYWHERE but on a good night's sleep! Sleep or lack of affects EVERYTHING about your life, including your perception of how bad pain is! When you are rested, your tolerance to pain is higher. Period. And as an added benefit, you will actually HAVE less pain because your joints will get a true release of gravity's pull during the night!

This latex foam topper is truly ideal for those seeking the perfect combination of firm and supportive. You will never sink into it like memory foam and you won't crush and flatten it like polyurethane foam. It is very good support for those with joint, back and or/circulation issues IMO. It is NOT going to alleviate neck problems or cervical issues. For that, you will need a firm support pillow that will not raise you too high over this foam pad. The pad comes with a very nice cover that holds it tightly in place so its not going to move very much. I never noticed any jello jiggle to this material and we have the queen. It does come glued at a seam if you buy a queen or larger. The glue STINKS and needs several days to air out somewhere once you open the package. If you are chemically sensitive, put it in another area of the house, shut a door, open a window and let it air out a couple days and it's good to go. My husband has had neck surgery with a plate, has lower back problems and circulation issue in one leg....he sleeps great on this. He also uses a very FLAT FIRM neck pillow. The company is very responsive and caring when you need to contact them. Highly recommended. We would choose this mattress pad over ANY other we have ever used or seen. We've gone through dozens of beds and hundreds of pillows trying to find the support we need. We both have orthopedic issues and while this won't fix them, it will help you find a way to sleep comfortably at night.
