The material is just like airplane pillows, but since I put them on mattresses there were no problems with tearing. They fit loosely on our twin mattresses, but it doesn't bother anybody, and I don't think I've heard any crinkly noises. They are soft enough.
As for whether they help with dust mites I think so, but I'm using them in conjunction with dust mite pillow covers and my asthmatic kids have seemed to cough less.I purchased this to cover my box spring due to it's lower cost. As the first reviewer said, it feels similar to the covers you find on airplane pillows, but thicker. It can probably be used as a mattress cover, but it does feel a little stiff and crinkly. Not soft like cotton, silk, or microfiber. I probably would not use it as a mattress cover, except for maybe a guest bed for children, or not too picky adults.
Installation was easy. I simply lifted up one end of my twin box spring until it was vertical, then carefully pulled the cover over it, working it down to the bottom. Then I set the now covered head end down into the bed frame, and lifted up the foot of the box spring to pull the cover over the last few inches, and zipped it up. My box spring is 8" thick, and the cover fits loose, but not excessive. If you have a 9" box spring it might be a little snug putting it on, so be careful. I was able to cover mine by myself, but on something larger than a twin, or thicker than 8", it would be better to have 2 people.
I plan on buying a higher quality unit that is softer to cover my mattress, but haven't decided on the brand or type yet. But I am very satisfied with this as a box spring cover. It's vastly better than a plastic or vinyl cover.We are trying really hard to prevent and problems with our mattresses and boxsprings (including bedbugs since they are all over the news). We purchased one of these for our bed and our daughters and they went on really well. They were really easy to put on (it helps to have two people for sure) and we feel very protected.Works Great! My son was breathing better after a few days! I would recommend this product to allergy sufferers everywhere!
