The Snuggle Stars Bear Constellation Night Light is a cute little stuffed bear with a plastic dome on his back that projects stars and a moon onto the ceiling. He is very well-made, soft with plush faux fur and about eleven inches long.
Undo the hook & loop strap across his belly and the body flattens out into a square to access the battery compartment or to change the timer switch. He is powered by three AAA batteries or a DC converter. I use a 3.6V DC converter that I happened to have on hand and it works as well as batteries, although the instructions call for a 4.5V DC convertor.
The projection light has five positions: from off, press the dome down once to cycle through the colors, press twice for amber, three times for blue, four times for green, and again to turn the light off. There is also a timer switch underneath that will turn the light off completely after twenty minutes. (Note that the photo shows all the colors on at the same time but it doesn't work that way in use--it's one at a time.)
I had never seen anything like this before and I understand that it's supposed to be a nightlight for youngsters but he is absolutely adorable and I must admit that I've enjoyed playing with him myself and watching the stars change colors. The nightlight is very handy for children and this could be a helpful part of a bedtime routine. The LEDs are bright enough to keep the dark away but not so bright as to prevent sleep.
A sample was provided for unbiased review. My Granddaughter has one of the Pillow Pets Dream Lites (the butterfly) and enjoys playing with it, so when I was offered a complimentary sample to test for review, I went in and checked hers out, and asked if she would help Grammy write a review about a bear. We accepted together and while I am writing the review she gets to keep the bear. :-)
When the bear arrived, we explored the likenesses and differences together (with good Grandma bonding time).
On the bear, the entire BIG area of stars IS the button! No tiny parts for her to deal with. However, because of this, she had to learn to put the bear somewhere flat to push down on it. Both have the same issue with the fact that there is a small piece of fabric covering the velcro that she struggles to remember to remove when using it to turn the pillow into a stuffed animal. Both are cute, both are easy to use, both have wonderful LED colored lights solid or varied, and both project stars onto the ceiling. In fact, both of them have a timer on/timer off button essential since my granddaughter hates items she can't control.
But there is one HUGE difference between the two items she didn't notice. The price tag! This one comes at significantly less than the Pillow Pets item, with all of the nice features.
If you are looking for a Teddy Bear that is a cool toy with lights for kids and won't break the bank, don't be afraid of this one. It is just as awesome as the more expensive model! While I received a complimentary sample for review, having the more expensive one already in our possession, I am very sensitive to the price difference, and was grateful to be able to find a toy that did something very much the same but didn't cost as much. So this one is both Granddaughter and Grandma approved.
