The Cooling Pillow (Medium Density).

I'm one of those individuals who is always hot at night. Even though we live in Upstate NY and we keep our thermostat set at 58 degrees at night, I'm still hot. When I read about this revolutionary pillow on the Amazon website, I decided to see if I could get some additional information. For that, I clicked on the Hammacher Schlemmer website and discovered that they were offering free shipping to first time customers. If you weren't a first time customer, you'd be forced to paying the outrageous shipping fee of $16.95, which is the same as they charge on Amazon. Hammacher Schlemmer has a reputation for selling very high quality products, albeit at very inflated prices. Since I needed the pillow and the shipping was free, I went ahead with the purchase.

The pillow arrived 5 days after I placed my order. When I opened up the box, there were all sorts of pillow fibers inside the box that had apparently escaped from the pillow itself. There was also a dark mark on one side of the pillow. I couldn't decide whether or not to send it back. Included in the box, was a King pillow cover with a zipper. I placed the pillow cover over the pillow, than zipped it up. Once the cover was zipped over the pillow, I no longer had to deal with the loose fibers and the dark mark was no longer visible. I was all set to start using it.

I have a fan set up about 6 feet away from my side of the bed, directly aimed at my head. Although this helps eliminate some of the heat, it doesn't eliminate all. That's why I bought the pillow. The pillow is extremely comfortable and with its medium density, your head doesn't sink down to the top of the mattress. It gets 5 stars for this. On the other hand, the cooling effect is quite disappointing. When I first went to sleep, I didn't notice any difference at all between the cooling effect of this pillow and the warming effect of an ordinary pillow. When I woke up in the middle of the night, my head was as hot as always, and the sweat had already stained the new pillowcase that I had put on. This was quite disappointing to me, as at least in my case, the cooling pillow served no purpose at all. Yes, as stated it was comfortable, but as far as keeping my head cool, it didn't perform as advertised. When I woke up this morning, I could feel the heat on the side of my head that was resting on the pillow. When I raised my head, I felt the pillowcase, which was very warm to the touch.

The bottom line is that this is a very comfortable pillow. However, since its being advertised as a cooling pillow and the cooling effect is minimal to none, it only gets 2 stars from me. In addition, it's outrageously overpriced and if you have to pay for shipping, Hammacher Schlemmer takes advantage of you by charging a shipping fee that's much higher than their actual cost.
